This reproduction depicts the organizational flag of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, commonly abbreviated DFLP. The vertical design uses a red field with a large red five-pointed star outlined in white, a curved band of Palestinian national colors, and the organization’s name in Arabic and Latin initials.
The white Arabic inscription reads الجبهة الديمقراطية لتحرير فلسطين, meaning “Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine.” Inside the star, a black map-shaped silhouette of Palestine is framed by green olive branches. The letters D.F.L.P. appear beneath the central design.
The red field and star reflect the organization’s socialist visual identity, while the Palestinian colors and territorial silhouette connect that identity to its national program. This reproduction provides a clear example of how Palestinian leftist movements adapted international socialist imagery into faction-specific flags.

Historical Context
The DFLP was established in February 1969 following a split from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Led by Nayef Hawatmeh, the new organization developed a Marxist-Leninist political outlook and became a faction within the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Its history combines political organization, participation in Palestinian representative institutions, and armed activity. It supported the concept of a Palestinian state alongside Israel earlier than some other PLO factions, while later opposing the Oslo framework. The organization has also been responsible for attacks on Israeli targets, including civilians.
The DFLP has maintained a distinct identity from both Fatah and Islamist movements such as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Its armed wing is known as the National Resistance Brigades, also called the Omar al-Qasim Brigades. The Arabic name on this flag identifies the broader Democratic Front.
In April 2024, the DFLP announced that its newly elected central committee had chosen Fahd Suleiman as secretary-general and named Hawatmeh president of the front. That dated leadership change is useful context when reading older accounts that describe Hawatmeh as its continuing secretary-general.
The flag’s combination of a red star, national colors, olive branches, and a map of Palestine makes it relevant to the study of Palestinian left-wing organizations and the visual culture of twentieth-century revolutionary movements.
