This reproduction combines the Palestinian national flag with the emblem of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, commonly abbreviated SSNP. The design retains the horizontal black, white, and green bands and the red hoist triangle, adding a white disc containing the party’s red four-armed whirlwind.
The emblem is known in Arabic as the Zawba’a, meaning “whirlwind” or “tempest.” Its placement inside the red triangle makes this a Palestine-themed political variant incorporating SSNP symbolism. Historical Context
The Syrian Social Nationalist Party was founded in Beirut in 1932 by Antoun Saadeh. Its central idea was the existence of a Syrian nation defined through a wider historical and geographical region, often described as Greater Syria, extending beyond the borders of the modern Syrian state.
Within that conception, Palestine forms part of the wider Syrian homeland imagined by the party. The use of a Palestinian flag with the SSNP emblem reflects this territorial ideology and the party’s involvement in regional Palestinian political questions.
The SSNP developed a secular nationalist doctrine and a strongly centralized party organization. It recruited across religious communities and became involved in political conflict, attempted coups, and armed activity in Lebanon and Syria. Saadeh was executed in Lebanon in 1949, but the organization continued through subsequent decades and internal divisions.
The party associates the whirlwind’s four arms with freedom, duty, organization, and power. Its standard black-field party flag and Palestine-themed variants belong to a broader system of SSNP political imagery.
During the Syrian Civil War, SSNP-linked fighters, including the Eagles of the Whirlwind militia, fought alongside Assad government forces. Assad’s government collapsed in December 2024. The flag shown here uses party symbolism whose origins predate that war by several decades, combined with the colors and layout of the Palestinian national flag.
