Historical Context
The Syrian Social Nationalist Party was founded in Beirut in 1932 by Antoun Saadeh. The movement promoted a form of secular Syrian nationalism centered on the concept of a geographically and historically defined “Greater Syria,” encompassing several areas of the eastern Mediterranean.
Its best-known symbol is the red zawba’a, or whirlwind, which has appeared on SSNP flags, insignia, uniforms, publications, and political material.
