Description

Reproduction flag featuring the emblem of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine, commonly known in English as Palestinian Islamic Jihad or PIJ.

The flag has a black background bordered in yellow, with a large white circular emblem in the center. The emblem depicts the golden Dome of the Rock, a red map-shaped silhouette of Palestine, two crossed black rifles, and a pair of yellow clenched fists.

The green Arabic inscription above the Dome of the Rock reads الله أكبر, meaning “God is greatest.” The black lettering around the lower portion of the emblem reads حركة الجهاد الإسلامي في فلسطين, meaning “Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine.”

The large yellow Arabic lettering beneath the emblem reads الجهاد الإسلامي, meaning “Islamic Jihad.”

The Arabic inscription around the upper portion of the emblem reproduces a passage from Qur’an 3:169:

ولا تحسبن الذين قتلوا في سبيل الله أمواتاً بل أحياء عند ربهم يرزقون

This may be translated as:

“Do not consider those killed in the way of God to be dead; rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.”

This is a newly manufactured reproduction intended for historical study, educational displays, theatrical productions, film and documentary props, vexillology collections, and private collections relating to modern Middle Eastern political and militant organizations.

Historical Context

The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine is a Palestinian Sunni Islamist militant organization that emerged during the late 1970s and early 1980s. It is widely known in English as Palestinian Islamic Jihad and is commonly abbreviated as PIJ.

The organization’s armed wing is known as the Al-Quds Brigades, or Saraya al-Quds in Arabic. This particular flag represents the parent Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement rather than exclusively representing the Al-Quds Brigades, since the Arabic inscription within the emblem identifies the organization as the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine.

The emblem combines several symbols associated with the movement. The Dome of the Rock represents Jerusalem, known in Arabic as Al-Quds. The red territorial silhouette represents historic Palestine, while the crossed rifles and clenched fists symbolize the organization’s armed and revolutionary identity.

Versions of this emblem have appeared on organizational flags, banners, publications, uniforms, public displays, funeral decorations, and official media associated with Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and several other governments. This reproduction is offered solely as a historical, educational, reference, theatrical, or collectible item.
