Serbian Škorpioni “Scorpions” Paramilitary Flag 3×5 ft – Yugoslav Wars Reproduction

This 3×5 ft reproduction flag features the distinctive imagery associated with the Škorpioni (Шкорпиони), or “Scorpions,” a Serbian paramilitary formation active during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s.

The design consists of a black field dominated by a large stylized yellow-gold scorpion. Beneath the emblem, the unit name Шкорпиони is displayed in red Serbian Cyrillic lettering, translating directly as “Scorpions.”

The black, gold, and red color scheme closely follows insignia historically associated with the unit. Period evidence documents Scorpions personnel wearing scorpion-based insignia, while wartime footage also records the presence of a large black unit flag at their headquarters in Đeletovci in 1995.

Historical Context

The Škorpioni, commonly known in English as the Scorpions, emerged during the wars accompanying the breakup of Yugoslavia. The unit was based for much of its early existence around Đeletovci in eastern Slavonia, where its personnel were initially used to protect strategically important oil fields before taking on broader combat assignments. Slobodan Medić, known by the nickname “Boca,” became the unit’s commander. Contemporary and later judicial records place the Scorpions within a complicated network of Serbian Krajina military formations and Serbian Interior Ministry and state-security structures.

The unit subsequently operated during conflicts in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo. Its visual identity developed during this period, with documented insignia incorporating a stylized scorpion against a black background. Evidence submitted in proceedings concerning the Yugoslav wars also records Scorpions insignia worn by personnel and a large black flag displayed at the unit’s Đeletovci headquarters in June 1995.

The Scorpions became particularly notorious for war crimes committed during the conflicts. Members of the unit were prosecuted and convicted in connection with the execution of six Bosniak prisoners near Trnovo in 1995, an event recorded on video by members of the unit, and for the killing of Kosovo Albanian civilians at Podujevo in 1999.

The flag reproduced here uses the black field, scorpion emblem, and Cyrillic unit name associated with the Scorpions’ historical visual identity. The precise rectangular arrangement should be understood as a modern reconstruction based upon documented unit insignia rather than as a claim that every Scorpions formation carried an identical standardized flag.
