Historical Context
This collar tab design is associated with the unit commanded by Oskar Dirlewanger, which underwent several reorganizations during World War II and was ultimately designated the 36th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS “Dirlewanger.”
The crossed-rifles-and-stick-grenade motif served as a unit-designation insignia worn on the right side of the collar. Surviving originals were typically produced on black cloth with silver-gray embroidery and often used an angled parallelogram-shaped construction rather than a standard rectangular tab.
The Dirlewanger formation originated as a penal unit and later incorporated a wider range of prisoners and disciplinary personnel. It operated extensively in occupied Eastern Europe and became notorious for atrocities and war crimes, including its involvement in the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944.
