Embroidered reproduction of the Salvadoran Army Cazador (Hunter) insignia associated with the country’s specialized counterinsurgency units during the Salvadoran Civil War (1979–1992).
Bearing a striking resemblance to the iconic Vietnam-era MACV-SOG skull insignia, this distinctive shield features a beret-wearing skull surrounded by jagged yellow lightning bolts against a red field. The Salvadoran national colors appear above the skull, while a curved CAZADOR banner and crossed weapons complete the design.
This compact 2.5-inch reproduction captures the appearance of the smaller Cazador insignia variants associated with military headgear.

Historical Context
The Cazadores de Guerrilleros (Guerrilla Hunters) were specialized Salvadoran Army formations established during the country’s civil war. Initially developed with assistance from Venezuelan military instructors in 1982, these units received training in counterinsurgency, reconnaissance, small-unit operations, and guerrilla warfare. U.S. military advisers, including personnel from the 7th Special Forces Group, subsequently participated in training Salvadoran forces.
The skull-and-beret design shares notable visual characteristics with the insignia of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG), a classified special operations organization active during the Vietnam War. Although the resemblance is apparent, a direct historical design connection has not been conclusively established.
The Salvadoran Cazador insignia is particularly associated with the Cuscatlán Battalion, one of the earliest formations of its kind. Surviving militaria examples include both larger shoulder insignia and smaller variants identified by collectors as hat patches.
