Historical Context
The yoke and arrows draw on the heraldic emblems of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, the Catholic Monarchs. The Juntas de Ofensiva Nacional-Sindicalista, or JONS, adopted the combined motif in 1931. It became the emblem of Falange Española de las JONS following the JONS’ merger in 1934 with José Antonio Primo de Rivera’s Falange Española, a Spanish fascist movement founded the previous year.
Uniform instructions dated 19 October 1934 prescribed a dark blue shirt with the yoke and five arrows embroidered in red on the left breast pocket. The emblem could be embroidered directly onto the shirt or onto a separate piece of matching cloth. The dark blue variation offered here follows that documented color combination.
The emblem was worn by party members and Falangist militiamen before and during the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939. Additional insignia identified ranks and appointments.
Following Franco’s 1937 unification of the Falangists and Carlists into FET y de las JONS, the emblem continued in use throughout the Franco period. It also appeared on uniforms of the Frente de Juventudes, established in 1940. Youth uniform instructions placed the Falange yoke and arrows on the left breast pocket and the organization’s separate swan emblem on the right.
