The rectangular design features prominent white “G.D.R.B.” lettering above the words “OPERATIVA MZ” and “Valparaíso.” A horizontal green, white, and red stripe represents the Mexican national colors. Historical Context

The Grupo de Reacción Bruno (G.D.R.B.) is an armed criminal faction associated with La Mayiza, the wing of the Sinaloa Cartel historically loyal to Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and subsequently aligned with his son, Ismael Zambada Sicairos, known as “El Mayito Flaco.” The group has been identified alongside other Zambada-aligned armed organizations, including Grupo Flechas–Operativa MZ, in the ongoing territorial conflict in Zacatecas.

Beginning around 2020, Zacatecas became a major battleground between the Sinaloa Cartel and the rival Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG). Both organizations sought control of strategic trafficking corridors connecting western and northern Mexico. Valparaíso, a mountainous municipality bordering Jalisco, Durango, and Nayarit, became particularly contested because of its rural transportation routes and geographic position.

The conflict produced numerous armed confrontations, including a major battle near San Juan Capistrano, Valparaíso, on June 24–25, 2021, that left at least 18 people dead. Fighting subsequently spread across surrounding communities, contributing to disappearances, forced displacement, and widespread insecurity.

Following the July 2024 detention of El Mayo Zambada, the Sinaloa Cartel fractured into competing factions, principally La Mayiza and Los Chapitos, the latter associated with the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. This internal conflict complicated existing territorial disputes, while Zambada-aligned armed groups continued confronting CJNG forces in Zacatecas and neighboring states.

In January 2025, Mexican reporting specifically identified Grupo de Reacción Bruno and Grupo Flechas as separate La Mayiza-aligned armed cells confronting CJNG’s Grupo Delta in Zacatecas. Reports in 2026 continued to associate the Bruno name with armed criminal activity in the Jerez and Tepetongo region, including allegations of extortion and intimidation made by local residents.

The G.D.R.B. insignia reflects the identities and factional affiliations that emerged during this prolonged conflict, providing a reference to the armed organizations involved in Mexico’s contemporary cartel wars.
