The design features a red field with a central white five-pointed star containing a black hammer and sickle. Along the left edge, a vertical white stripe displays the traditional Chinese characters 中國工農紅軍, translating to “Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army.”

Historical Context
The Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army emerged from the communist-led uprisings of 1927, following the breakdown of cooperation between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Nationalist Kuomintang (KMT). Early revolutionary forces, including those associated with Mao Zedong’s Autumn Harvest Uprising, established armed organizations that eventually developed into the Chinese Red Army.
During the late 1920s and early 1930s, communist forces established revolutionary base areas across rural China, most notably in Jiangxi Province. These forces fought a series of campaigns against Nationalist armies commanded by Chiang Kai-shek while pursuing land redistribution and expanding communist political control in their territories.
The Red Army became particularly associated with the Long March of 1934–1935, a major strategic retreat undertaken after Nationalist military offensives threatened communist strongholds in southern China. The surviving forces eventually consolidated in northwestern China, where the communist movement rebuilt its military and political organization.
In 1937, following the outbreak of full-scale war between China and Japan, the principal Red Army formations were reorganized into the Eighth Route Army and New Fourth Army under the Second United Front between the Communists and Nationalists. These formations became important predecessors of the modern People’s Liberation Army.
Historical Flag Design
The earliest Chinese communist military flags featured red backgrounds, five-pointed stars, and crossed agricultural and industrial symbols. A white vertical strip often identified the formation or unit.
In 1930, the Chinese Red Army adopted more standardized flag regulations incorporating a central white star containing black sickle-and-axe imagery. Subsequent designs introduced hammer-and-sickle symbols and altered the placement and colors of the star.
This patch incorporates elements associated with these historical designs, including the red field, white star, hammer and sickle, and traditional Chinese lettering. It represents a modern interpretation of Chinese Red Army flag imagery rather than a documented reproduction of a historically issued uniform insignia.
