Historical Context
The Comando Especial Antiterrorista was established in 1985 during the Salvadoran Civil War, with missions including counterterrorism, hostage rescue, and protection of senior officials. Its early organization was associated with the Policía de Hacienda, or Treasury Police, one of the country’s former militarized security forces.
Following the 1992 peace accords and the dissolution of the Treasury Police, CEAT became part of the Comando de Fuerzas Especiales (CFE). The command brought together CEAT, the Batallón de Paracaidistas (Parachute Battalion), and the Grupo de Operaciones Especiales (GOE), consolidating several of El Salvador’s specialized military formations.
