Historical Context
El Salvador’s airborne forces trace their origins to Salvadoran officers and noncommissioned officers who received U.S. airborne and Ranger training in 1963. During the Salvadoran Civil War of 1980–1992, the airborne battalion operated under the Fuerza Aérea Salvadoreña, based at Ilopango, and participated in helicopter-borne operations alongside its parachute role.
This particular design appears on page 87 of the February 1984 issue of Soldier of Fortune. An SOF Exchange advertisement illustrates the patch and describes it as the battalion’s “new 1983 issue” shoulder insignia, providing a contemporary reference for the pattern reproduced here.
On February 6, 1993, the Parachute Battalion transferred from the Air Force to the Comando de Fuerzas Especiales.
