Historical Context
Founded in 1932 under Plínio Salgado, the Ação Integralista Brasileira developed into one of Brazil’s largest organized fascist movements during the interwar period. Its members were commonly known as the Camisas-Verdes, or “Green Shirts,” after the standardized green uniform worn at meetings, marches, and public events.
The Greek letter Sigma served as the AIB’s central emblem and appeared extensively on uniforms, flags, publications, and organizational material. The symbol was associated with the mathematical concept of summation, reflecting the movement’s idea of integrating different elements of Brazilian society into a unified national whole.
