This embroidered patch reproduces the sword-pattern insignia associated with the Škorpioni (Шкорпиони), or “Scorpions,” a Serbian paramilitary formation active during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s.
The shield-shaped design features a black field surrounded by a gold embroidered border, with the Serbian red, blue, and white tricolor across the upper portion. At the center is a vertical gold sword accompanied by four Serbian firesteels (ocila), a traditional element of Serbian heraldry. The unit name Шкорпиони is embroidered in red Cyrillic script along the lower edge.
Historical evidence indicates that the Scorpions used multiple forms of unit insignia, including this sword-pattern design as well as a separate scorpion-emblem variant. Historical Context
The Škorpioni emerged during the conflicts accompanying the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s and operated in areas of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and later Kosovo. The unit became associated with Serbian military and security structures and developed its own recognizable uniform insignia.
Period photographs, testimony, and later judicial records document Scorpions personnel wearing distinctive sleeve patches, including a sword-and-firesteel design bearing the Serbian tricolor and the Cyrillic unit name, as well as another insignia centered on a scorpion motif.
The unit is also historically associated with serious war crimes committed during the Yugoslav conflicts, including the killing of prisoners near Trnovo following the fall of Srebrenica in 1995 and the killing of civilians in Podujevo, Kosovo, in 1999. Several members were later prosecuted and convicted. Because of this history, surviving insignia and reproductions are primarily of interest in the study of Balkan military history, paramilitary organizations, conflict archaeology, and historical collections.
