This reproduction is based on an Abu Obaida portrait flag observed at protests against Israel in the United States. It reproduces that protest-banner design, combining the Palestinian national flag with a large portrait of the original spokesman of Hamas’s Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades.
The black, white, and green horizontal bands and red hoist triangle form the background, while the portrait occupies much of the right half. Abu Obaida is shown in camouflage clothing, wearing a red-and-white keffiyeh over his face and a green headband bearing al-Qassam imagery. His raised index finger, papers, and chest insignia reproduce the appearance associated with his recorded military statements. The Arabic chest patch reads الناطق العسكري, meaning “military spokesman.”
The composition brings together a Palestinian national symbol and the image of a particular factional media figure in a design used in American demonstrations. Historical Context
Hamas emerged during the First Intifada in 1987. Its armed wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, was established in 1991 and developed a separate military emblem and communications apparatus within the wider movement.
Abu Obaida became the public voice of that armed wing through filmed statements, press appearances, and announcements concerning its military activities. His concealed face, red keffiyeh, and green headband became recurring features of the Brigades’ media presentation. English spellings of his alias include Abu Ubaida, Abu Ubayda, and Abu Obeida.
During the Gaza war that began in 2023, his image circulated widely through broadcasts, posters, and political displays. The particular flag design reproduced here was identified at protests against Israel in the United States. Its use in that setting connects the design to American protest culture and the international circulation of Palestinian political imagery.
The original spokesman was killed in 2025, and Hamas publicly confirmed his death on December 29, 2025. A successor appeared using the same Abu Obaida alias. The portrait reproduced here depicts the original spokesman and should be understood within that earlier historical setting.
