Historical Context
The Ação Integralista Brasileira was launched under the leadership of writer and journalist Plínio Salgado with the publication of its Manifesto of October 7, 1932. It subsequently developed into a nationwide mass political organization during the Getúlio Vargas era.
The AIB promoted authoritarian nationalism, corporatism, anti-liberalism, and anti-communism and is generally classified by historians as a Brazilian fascist or fascist-inspired movement. Its members were popularly known as the camisas-verdes, or “Green Shirts,” and used the motto “Deus, Pátria e Família” (“God, Fatherland and Family”).
The Greek sigma represented a “summation”—the movement’s stated objective of integrating Brazilians and different elements of society into a unified national whole. AIB protocols described blue as representing the organization’s national scope, while white symbolized peace, purity, and sincerity.
The AIB was dissolved in December 1937 after the establishment of Vargas’s Estado Novo and the abolition of Brazil’s political parties. The organization remains controversial because of its authoritarian and paramilitary character, its relationship to European fascism, and the antisemitic writings of prominent AIB leader Gustavo Barroso.
