Description

Reproduction embroidered patches based on insignia associated with the armed forces of the Republic of Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War of 1967–1970.

Two designs are available:

Biafran Rising Sun – Features the distinctive yellow half-sun and rays on a black field. The Rising Sun was one of the principal symbols of the Republic of Biafra and was worn as an identifying insignia on Biafran military uniforms during the war.

4th Commando Brigade Skull & Crossbones – Features a white skull and crossed bones on a black field, reproducing the death’s-head insignia associated with the Biafran 4th Commando Brigade commanded by German former French Foreign Legionnaire Rolf Steiner in 1968. Steiner’s commando force was also referred to in his own later account as his “Black Legion.”

The patches may be purchased individually or together as a complete two-patch set.

Historical Context

The Republic of Biafra was proclaimed on May 30, 1967, when Nigeria’s former Eastern Region attempted to secede following years of political upheaval, military coups, ethnic violence, and the displacement of large numbers of Igbo people. The resulting Nigerian Civil War continued until January 1970.

One of the most recognizable symbols of the new republic was the Rising Sun. Derived from the emblem displayed on the Biafran flag, the yellow half-sun was also produced as a military identification badge and worn on the uniforms of Biafran soldiers. Contemporary accounts describe the bright yellow sun appearing on soldiers’ shoulders, while surviving documentation identifies the Rising Sun as an official armed-forces identification symbol.

The second design is associated more specifically with the 4th Commando Brigade, an unconventional Biafran formation commanded during 1968 by Rolf Steiner, a German veteran of the French Foreign Legion. Steiner organized and trained Biafran commandos for raiding, reconnaissance, light-infantry and other specialized operations.

Steiner selected a skull and crossbones, or death’s head, as the identifying emblem of his commandos. Period and later military histories describe members of the 4th Commando Brigade as recognizable by this distinctive insignia. Steiner subsequently referred to the force in his memoir as his “Black Legion,” a name that has also become associated with the unit among collectors and historians of mercenary warfare.

Together, the Rising Sun and death’s-head designs represent two closely connected forms of Biafran wartime insignia: the Rising Sun representing the broader Biafran armed forces and national identity, and the skull and crossbones representing Steiner’s famed 4th Commando Brigade.
