Historical Context
The Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army was the Chinese Communist Party’s military force during the early Chinese Civil War and a predecessor of the People’s Liberation Army. Communist forces adopted the Red Army name in 1928.
Early military flags varied by unit and region. The red field symbolized revolution, while the star and crossed tools represented communist leadership and the alliance of workers and peasants. White-star designs formed part of this early flag tradition, before later patterns placed a yellow star separately from the hammer and sickle. This reproduction features the general army name in place of a specific unit designation.
