Reproduction embroidered flag patch of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), a Mindanao-based movement associated with the Moro conflict and the subsequent Bangsamoro peace process in the southern Philippines.
Measuring 3.5 inches wide by approximately 2.33 inches high, this rectangular patch features a horizontal white sword on a green field, separated by a narrow red stripe from a white panel bearing a gold crescent and five-pointed star. A black satin border surrounds the design.
This pattern is documented on the upper sleeves of MILF personnel wearing tiger-stripe camouflage uniforms, including guards photographed in 2012. Members of the movement’s armed wing, the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF), wore this flag design alongside other organizational insignia.
This modern reproduction is intended for historical study, educational displays, and private collections documenting Philippine insurgencies and Southeast Asian armed movements.

Historical Context
The Moro Islamic Liberation Front emerged from a division within the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). In 1977, Salamat Hashim and his supporters broke with MNLF leader Nur Misuari over leadership, political strategy, and the role of Islam in the movement. The breakaway organization formally adopted the MILF identity in 1984.
The MILF became a major force in the southern Philippine conflict, particularly in central Mindanao. Its political program emphasized Moro self-determination and an Islamic framework for society and government. Its armed wing, the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces, operated through territorial commands and established camps, including the former headquarters at Camp Abubakar.
The sword, crescent, and star formed part of the movement’s visual identity across flags and insignia. This patch reproduces a version documented on camouflage uniforms, with the white sword occupying the green panel and the gold crescent and star displayed separately on white.
Decades of fighting and negotiations shaped the MILF’s development. The Philippine government’s 2000 military campaign captured Camp Abubakar and other strongholds, causing extensive civilian displacement. Subsequent negotiations, facilitated by Malaysia, produced the Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro on October 15, 2012, followed by the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro on March 27, 2014.
The peace process faced serious setbacks, including the January 2015 Mamasapano clash involving Philippine police, MILF forces, and other armed groups. Nevertheless, the negotiated settlement provided the foundation for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), established in 2019 following ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law. Implementation has included the phased decommissioning of MILF combatants and weapons, reintegration assistance, and the development of former camp communities.
