Historical Context
The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades emerged in the early 1990s as the military wing of Hamas during the First Intifada period and became one of the organization’s most recognizable armed factions. The group is named after Izz ad-Din al-Qassam, a Syrian-born preacher and anti-colonial militant active in British Mandate Palestine during the 1930s.
Over time, the Brigades became associated with armed operations, tunnel networks, rocket development, and militant activity centered largely in Gaza. Their insignia often combines religious symbolism, armed imagery, Arabic script, and references to Jerusalem, reflecting the group’s ideological, territorial, and military messaging.
