This embroidered patch is a reproduction of a rare insignia from the Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), the leftist guerrilla movement that fought during the Salvadoran Civil War (1980–1992). In the final years of the conflict, as the FMLN positioned itself as a legitimate national force ahead of the 1992 peace accords, its fighters began identifying as the “Ejército Nacional para la Democracia” (National Army for Democracy).
The shield-shaped design features a red top bar with a white star and the initials FMLN, symbolizing revolutionary struggle. Below, a deep blue field frames a circular white emblem with the words “Ejército Nacional para la Democracia” in bold red lettering. At the center, a stylized green laurel and triangle motif reflects unity, strength, and the movement’s political aspirations.

Historical Background
The Ejército Nacional para la Democracia (END) was the name formally adopted by the FMLN’s military arm in late 1990. The designation was intended to portray the guerrilla forces not just as insurgents but as a national army fighting for democracy, committed to replacing military dictatorship with civilian rule. Surviving original patches of this emblem are extremely scarce and are today preserved in museums in El Salvador, such as the Museo de la Revolución in Perquín.
