Historical Context
The red-white-black tricolor with two green stars originated with the United Arab Republic, the union of Egypt and Syria established in 1958. The two stars represented the union’s constituent states. Syria later used other flag designs before restoring this pattern in 1980 under Hafez al-Assad.
Bashar al-Assad succeeded his father as president in 2000. During his presidency, official portraits and banners connected his personal image with the state, the ruling Ba’ath Party, and the institutions of the Syrian government. This style of imagery remained prominent during the civil war that developed from the 2011 uprising.
His rule ended when opposition forces entered Damascus on December 8, 2024, bringing the Assad family’s decades in power to a close. The red-white-black flag consequently became a historical symbol of the former government and continued to appear in displays associated with its supporters.
Syria’s March 2025 Constitutional Declaration specified the green-white-black national flag with three red stars. This reproduction preserves the earlier flag and Assad portrait as a record of the former political order. The distinction is particularly relevant when identifying photographs, banners, and other material from the periods before and after the government’s collapse.
