This embroidered patch represents the insignia of Zimbabwe’s 5th Brigade, a unit established in 1981 from former ZANLA cadres and trained by North Korean instructors. The brigade was placed under direct command of the Prime Minister’s office, operating outside of the regular army structure. Known by the nickname Gukurahundi (“the early rain that washes away the chaff”), the 5th Brigade played a controversial role in both the Mozambican Civil War and Zimbabwe’s internal conflicts during the 1980s.
The patch itself is shield-shaped, featuring a fierce leopard head on a bright yellow background, bordered in black. The leopard was chosen to symbolize power, aggression, and tactical precision—qualities the brigade sought to project.
