Description

This embroidered patch features the classic “The Wild Geese” design, depicting a flying goose over water with island silhouettes beneath—an emblem long associated with the mercenary tradition popularized by Mike “Mad Mike” Hoare. The round badge layout and illustrative style reflect the commemorative patches produced in the early 1980s, rather than any officially issued military insignia. This example represents the larger display-size variant commonly encountered among collectors.

Historical Context

“The Wild Geese” is a historic term originally used for Irish soldiers who left Ireland after the 17th century to serve in foreign armies. In the modern era, the name was deliberately revived by Mike Hoare, a mercenary commander best known for leading 5 Commando during the Congo Crisis (1964–1965).

Following Hoare’s failed 1981 Seychelles coup attempt, the Wild Geese identity became widely known beyond specialist circles. Beginning in 1982, unofficial Wild Geese commemorative patches were commissioned and sold by the Hoare family as part of fundraising efforts to help cover legal expenses. These patches were later promoted to a wider audience through mercenary-culture publications and mail-order outlets associated with the Soldier of Fortune era.

Importantly, this patch was not an operational insignia worn in combat, nor was it an officially issued 5 Commando badge. It is best understood as a post-service commemorative emblem tied to Hoare’s personal legacy and the mythology surrounding his mercenary units.
