This embroidered patch features the subdued “The Wild Geese” design, showing a flying goose over stylized water lines in a low-visibility color palette. Produced in a smaller diameter, this version reflects the beret-size format commonly associated with unofficial wear, display, or collector presentation rather than combat-issued insignia. The simplified earth-tone scheme mirrors the aesthetic popularized during the post-Congo mercenary era.

Historical Context
“The Wild Geese” is a historic term originally referring to Irish soldiers who left Ireland after the late 17th century to serve in foreign armies. In the 20th century, the name was deliberately revived by Mike “Mad Mike” Hoare, the mercenary commander most closely associated with 5 Commando during the Congo Crisis (1964–1965).
Following Hoare’s failed 1981 Seychelles coup attempt, the Wild Geese identity became widely known beyond specialist circles. Beginning in the early 1980s, unofficial commemorative patches bearing the Wild Geese name and imagery were commissioned and sold as fundraising and legacy items, later circulating among collectors and enthusiasts of the Soldier of Fortune–era mercenary culture.
This patch is not an official military or unit-issued insignia and was not worn operationally. It represents a post-service commemorative design, valued today for its historical association and compact beret-style format.
