Description

This 3.5-inch embroidered patch features the official emblem of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) — also known in French as the Confédération des États du Sahel or Alliance des États du Sahel — a political, military, and economic alliance formed in 2023 by the governments of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The emblem is richly detailed, showcasing a baobab tree rooted in the sun-drenched soil of the Sahel, with a grazing zebu below and a white dove in flight above — symbols of resilience, livelihood, and peace. Two golden stars above the scene signify the unity and aspirations of the founding states. The green border and red outer ring bear the inscription “CONFÉDÉRATION DES ÉTATS DU SAHEL,” with the initials AES stitched in bold white at the bottom.

Background:

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) was officially established on September 16, 2023, with the signing of the Liptako-Gourma Charter, in response to rising insecurity, political instability, and growing discontent with regional organizations perceived as acting on behalf of foreign powers. The alliance marked a formal break from ECOWAS in January 2025, after all three member countries — governed by military leadership following coups — withdrew in protest of sanctions and external interference.

AES was conceived to promote mutual defense, regional security, and political solidarity. Its motto, “One Space – One People – One Destiny,” reflects a shared vision for integration and sovereignty. The alliance has since moved toward military coordination and has even signaled intentions to pursue a shared currency.

Founding Leaders:

Colonel Assimi Goïta (Mali)

Captain Ibrahim Traoré (Burkina Faso)

General Abdourahamane Tchiani (Niger)

These figures have emerged as powerful voices for a new, Pan-Sahelian identity, forging partnerships with countries such as Russia, Turkey, and Iran while rejecting neocolonial influence and dependency on Western institutions.
